HO! HO! HO! MERRY CHRISTMAS

FROM SANTA AT BOOKS & MORE!!!!!

We have over 100 Christmas sale items at our store this year and have increased the discounts on most of them.  We will be open tomorrow (Saturday) from 10:00 until 2:00, and next week Tuesday and Wednesday from 11:00 until 6:00 and Thursday from 11:00 until 2:00.  Plan now to stop in to take advantage of these last-minute Christmas specials.  Incidentally, we’ll be closed Friday (Christmas day), Saturday, Sunday and Monday and will re-open on Tuesday, December 29th

This Sunday, December 20, Books & More will be open from 1:00 until 3:30 for your shopping pleasure as snow falls in downtown Moultrie.

Some of you know that I’ve been letting my hair and beard grow to play Santa this year at the request of our pastor, Hugh Ward.  Wednesday was my first appearance for three classes of children at the First Presbyterian Pre-School.  After I left there, I stopped off at several downtown businesses here in Moultrie.  At Suzanne's Quilt Shop, they got their camera and took a couple of pictures of me.  Within a few hours they had put together this blog that was (in my opinion) a quite creative story of Santa's visit to Suzanne's Quilt Shop.  If you have a minute, check it out at http://www.suzannesquilts.com/blog/post/2009/12/16/Santa-Claus-came-to-town!.aspx

If you are not already planning to attend church this Sunday, we cordially invite you to attend the 11:00 am worship service at First Presbyterian Church, 501 1st St SE, Moultrie.  Fran and I sing in the choir, and this Sunday we, along with fifteen musicians from the Albany Symphony Orchestra, will present our Christmas cantata. We also have a meaningful Christmas eve communion service at the Presbyterian Church at 6:00 pm on Thursday, December 24.

HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A BLESSED AND PROSPEROUS 2010!

HO! HO! HO! MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM SANTA AT BOOKS & MORE!!!!!

Here’s a hint for all of those who are trying to find the perfect gift for somebody special – a wife, an aunt, a sister, or just a friend.  Santa told us that some of the women here in Moultrie had told him that they REALLY wanted on of the “Cooking in High Cotton” cookbooks by the Georgia Cotton Women for Christmas.  There are some fantastic recipes from some of the best cooks here in southwest Georgia, as well as some recipes that have been handed down from generations long ago.  On the day of the Christmas Parade, Saturday, December 12,  Jane Gibbs, member of the board of directors of the Georgia Cotton Women will be autographing this book from 4:00 pm until 5:30.

Speaking of book signings, on that same afternoon starting at 3:00 Gloria Smith will be autographing her book, “Bloom Where You are Appointed.”  I have known Gloria and Joe Smith since shortly after buying Moultrie’s downtown bookstore in 1999.  When she stopped in the store a few months ago and showed me an advance copy of her book, I was surprised that one of my customers had written a book.  Gloria shares with the readers comments about Moultrie plus all the other cities that were home for Joe and Gloria in their 40 years of service as pastor and wife.  Gloria gives an inside look at what life is about for a pastor’s wife.  She shows us how we can live to make the best out of our life wherever we are planted by telling their life story. She is skilled at sharing Joe’s humorous way looking at different situations of life.  One story she shares with us is about Curious George a toy monkey that one of the Sunday school classes gave Joe to help him in his children’s sermons.  Joe caught the monkey’s tail on fire. The next week he was telling the children “Well, George’s tail has healed nicely!  Isn’t it good to have George back at church after surgery?”  If you had been a regular listener to the service on the radio or in the sanctuary you would know that Joe was referring to George the toy monkey but if you had been just a new listener you would have a whole different understanding to his comments that Sunday morning.

We have copies of the New York Times best-seller by Sarah Palin, “Going Rogue.” From her humble beginnings to her time in the spotlight as the first female Republican Vice President candidate, Sarah Palin has led an extraordinary life. Going Rogue will recount her political experiences, her time as Mayor of Wasilla and as the first female governor of Alaska, as well as her rapid rise on the national stage during the 2008 campaign. Additionally, she'll share insights into the personal challenges she's faced including balancing her time as a working mother, recognizing the war's impact with her son serving combat in Iraq, having a child with a disability and supporting her teenage daughter with an unplanned pregnancy.

For the children, we also have “The Christmas Sweater.”  This picture book by Glenn Beck tells the story of Eddie, a boy who spurns his mother's gift of a sweater. Later, the sweater teaches Eddie that the true meaning of a gift is that it is given with love.  Another book for children is “Dewey – There’s a Cat in the Library!”  This is the endearing and heartwarming true story of Dewey, the celebrated library cat, which is now available for the youngest of readers, in this new, fully illustrated picture-book adventure, based on the "New York Times" bestseller "Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World."

Here are just a few of our Christmas Specials:

All Christmas cards & books are 10% off the retail price and our large stuffed Santa Bears are priced at $35 each.

For the artist (new or experienced) we have a wide selection of easels at a discounted Christmas price (a saving from $10 to $ 40.)

Just a reminder that Books & More will be closed on Friday and Saturday, December 25 & 26 (in addition to our normal Sunday and Monday when we are closed) and also on Friday and Saturday, January 1 & 2, 2010.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!

Summer is not over, but kids and teachers are almost back in school. Hope you have had some time to set aside for yourself to read some of your favorite authors and search out and find others. Our Summertime Half Price Used Book Sale is over. If you missed it, our next one is scheduled for November.

If you missed Melody Jenkins’ (director of the Moultrie / Colquitt County Library) author signing at Books & More last month, you can still purchase copies here at Books & More and take them to the library to be autographed. She is also encouraging everyone to retrieve their old photos and take them by the library so she can scan them (you DON’T have to leave your precious photos there – they do it right away) in preparation for a second book. This first book was published in preparation for Moultrie’s sesquicentennial festivities which will occur this fall.

For the artists out there, we just received a large shipment of canvass boards in many different sizes. Maybe you have been putting off painting that special project. This might be a great time to let your creativity work with the paint and the canvass.

For the remote control airplane enthusiasts, the local remote control airplane club is hosting a swap meet on Saturday, August 15 at Spence Field in the community building. RC modelers will be bringing their planes in hopes of selling them at a great price.

Upcoming Events:
Moultrie is blessed with a fine diving facility that can be used to host such nationally known diving events as the Junior National Diving Championships that is going on this week. There are diving teams from all over at this event. If you happen to meet any of these divers or their families as you work and shop I know that you’ll make them feel genuinely welcome to Moultrie. Better yet, stop by the diving facility and spend some time watching these outstanding athletes compete. See article in Moultrie Observer at http://www.moultrieobserver.com/sports/local_story_216225824.html?keyword=topstory
This Tuesday, August 11, we will be attending the Rocky Jones Foundation benefit dinner featuring Regi Campbell and Richard Chancy, the co-authors of “Mentor Like Jesus.” I’m looking forward to listening to their presentation and having both of them autograph my copy of their book while at the same time helping a very worthy local cause. http://www.moultrieobserver.com/archivesearch/local_story_210233108.html
Then on Friday, August 14, The TAMS are in concert at Withers Auditorium to benefit the Colquitt County Arts Center. Tickets are available at Lazarus Department Store and at the Arts Center. More information at http://www.moultrieobserver.com/archivesearch/local_story_199225522.html

Just a couple of weeks ago, I finally had time to read “90 Minutes in Heaven,” a book that was written several years ago by Don Piper. We have sold countless copies of it. You’ll find a book review of this posted on our web site at www.franswebsites.com/books.html.

Come by soon and “Let’s Talk Books!”

Moultrie author and director of the Moultrie / Colquitt County Library, Melody Jenkins, has scheduled a book signing at Books & More for Friday, July 24, at 4:00 pm. Her book is full of photos from Moultrie’s past. If your family has been here for a while, you may find a photo of someone you know. Melody collected these images in honor of Moultrie’s sesquicentennial which will be celebrated later this year.

Many of you, when you stop in at Books & More, enjoy telling me about one of your favorite books that you’ve read recently. Why not come this Monday, July 27, and share your comments with other booklovers. Our Books & More Book Club meets in the small front meeting room at Western Sizzlin’. Join us at 6:30 for dinner. Round Robin discussion of books we’ve enjoyed will start around 7:00.

Only eight days left for our Summer Half Price Used Book Sale. Now is the time to stock up on your favorite authors or try a new author.

I made a date with my sweetie for this Saturday evening to go to the Colquitt County Arts Center Theater’s summer musical “Children of Eden.” Show dates are Friday, July 24, and Saturday July 25, at 7 p.m. The following weekend shows are Saturday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. and Sunday Aug. 2, at 2 p.m. All tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the box office of the Arts Center Theatre July 20, 21 and 23 from noon to 2 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. So make a date with your sweetie and enjoy “Children of Eden.

On Tuesday evening, May 26, over fifteen Moultrie area authors will be attending a “Books and Bar-B-Q” fundraiser at the Moultrie/Colquitt County Library. Due to State budget cuts, the funding for the purchase of new books has been reduced again. This would be a great opportunity to meet these authors and at the same time have a delicious bar-b-q supper and support your local library in their ability to purchase additional books. If you have any questions about this event, please phone Jinx Stubbs at the library (985-6540).

Is you photo on the cover of a book? It could be if you attended Sunset School in the 1950’s. Eugene E. “Duke” Ellington wrote a book called “What’s a Country Boy Like Me Doing in a Place Like This,” and on the cover he has a picture of some students in front of the old Sunset School from the 1950’s. You might want to stop by the store to see if you recognize yourself or one of your friends or relatives in this class photo.

The most recent book I’ve reviewed for the Albany Herald is “Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World.” Dewey lived for nineteen years in the library in Spencer, Iowa. In a lot of ways, Spencer reminded me of our city of Moultrie. If you like cats, I know you will enjoy this great read. Click here to read the book review on this book.

Newsletter - February 2008

Ramblings from Old Jim –

I’m always glad to start out our newsletter talking about the “most asked-about” sale that we have in our store 3 times a year – our HALF PRICE USED BOOK SALE! Maybe the last time you stopped in, we were out of some of the books by your favorite author. We have re-stocked the shelves with many titles so schedule your visit early in the month in order to take advantage of a good selection. This sale will be during the entire month of February.

We have also just taken on a new line of wooden puzzles and toys for young children from a company called “Melissa & Doug” makers of educational toys and children’s products. We have their products on display in 5 different areas of our store with the largest display being at the beginning of the main aisle where we display our used hardbacks. We also stock some of their items in our art supplies as well as a display of their products in the children’s room located in the back room of our store. Click here to see some of the Melissa & Doug items that we stock at our store.

Hello Book Lovers,

Also, we have tickets for the benefit concert for Serenity House that will take place in Norman Park on August 25. John Berry will be in concert at the Georgia Baptist Convention Center beginning at 7:00 pm. If you want to hear a sample of his music, go to http://johnberry.musiccitynetworks.com/. Serenity House, Moultrie's shelter for battered women and their children, is in need of funds and I hope you will support them by purchasing a ticket for this concert. Speaking of August 25, on that date, the CCHS 50th Regiment Band is conducting a "Play-a-thon" to raise funds for the band's spring trip. Matthew Flannigan, Eagle Scout from Boy Scout Troop 410 that meets at Books and More, is now a freshman at CCHS and is playing in the band. If you would like to make a donation in Matthew's name, please stop by Books & More and sign up with your pledge, or you can make a donation either with your name or anonymously. I commend Matthew for all his endeavors. Incidentally, the "Play-a-thon" will start at 9:00 am until 7:00 pm with 2 breaks at noon and 4:30. The public is cordially invited to enjoy any or all of the "Play-a-thon."

Also as a reminder our next book club meeting will take place on Monday, August 27th at Western Sizzlin' in the small front meeting room. While we are mentioning CCHS activities, the fall concert for the Choral Department will be on Tuesday, October 9, at 7:30 pm in Withers Auditorium. Mark your calendars early and plan to attend. These concerts are always a treat!

The YMCA will be conducting an open house that same day to show those of you who are not currently members what they have to offer you.

Fran and I are glad to join the team at the "Y" as dance instructors. During the last year several of you have asked about when we would have our next dance class here in Moultrie. We have finally worked out the details and will be offering the classes on Thursday nights from 7:00 until 9:00 pm at the YMCA beginning on Thursday, October 4. Some of the businesses have links to their web sites as well. So check us out.

Newsletter - March 2007

On Thursday evening, March 29 from 6:00 until 8:00 Georgia's First Lady, Mary Purdue, will be shopping at 26 different businesses in Historic Downtown Moultrie to help promote an event benefiting Hero House, the Children's Advocacy Center here in Moultrie. On that evening, 10% of YOUR PURCHASES will be donated to Hero House. So review your gift-giving needs for upcoming events like Easter, Mother's Day, Graduation, Father's Day, birthdays, or even next Christmas and purchase these gifts on Thursday, March 29 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm.

On Saturday, March 24, at 10:30 am in the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church, author Susan Bordenkircher, who was raised here in Moultrie, will be the guest speaker. She will be talking about her book "Yoga for Christians." Susan says God gave her the vision for her yoga-based ministry, Outstretched in Worship. For more information, contact 1st Baptist Church, 985-2103.

In our newsletter last month, we mentioned our new employee at the store, Fred Meyer. Since then, we have added another part-time employee, Elizabeth, who will be specializing in our various children's programs. We have installed new carpet in the back room and moved 90% of our children's inventory to that location. Elizabeth will be reading to the children on Saturdays beginning in the near future. We'll let you know the details as they are finalized. We hope you will be receptive to this new concept in sharing our love of books to you, your children and grand children.

This year's "Spring Fling and Back Yard Bar-B-Que" is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 20 & 21. Fran and I are really looking forward to being here for this year's event since we have never been in town in previous years. The weekend begins with a FREE concert at the Lewis Hill Amphitheater on the courthouse square on Friday evening and continues with various activities scheduled during the day on Saturday. In order to help fund this event, the Downtown Moultrie Association is raffling off a deluxe golf cart. Tickets are $10 each and are available at Books & More and other downtown locations. There are only 1,000 tickets, so your chances of winning the golf cart or any of the other prizes are a whole lot better than your chances of winning the Georgia Lotto.

The final Harry Potter book "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" will be released in the United States on Saturday, July 21. We have never had a big celebration at 1 minute after midnight, the first legal "right to sell" time for any book, but we are making plans now for a grand celebration encouraging people to come in costumes and using a Harry Potter theme. There will be refreshments, and if you would like us to reserve you a copy of the 1st edition of this final book in the Harry Potter series, please phone the store 985-9425 or send an e-mail to fran_jim_dance@yahoo.com.

The Book Club will meet this coming Monday, March 26, in the small front meeting room at the Western Sizzlin'. We enjoy dinner around at 6:30 and start our discussions on books around 7:00. At our February meeting, our "Round Robin" discussion of the books we have enjoyed recently covered a wide variety of reading, and Denny Gore did a tremendous job with the in-depth review of "The Supreme Court: The Personalities and Rivalries That Defined America" by Jeffrey Rosen. Denny used to teach history and I found myself envying those students who learned history from him. He has a great knack for making history interesting! We had more discussion about his book than we have had for any book since we first started our book club. Our own Elizabeth will be doing the in-depth review for this month's meeting. Come join us for good food and fellowship and "Let's Talk Books!"

Newsletter - January 2007

Hi Booklovers from Books & More and Happy New Year.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Kathy has started her new job in Thomasville, and we have a new employee at the store. His name is Fred Meyer. He is a book reader and is quickly learning our way of doing business at Books & More. So please be patient and welcome him to the team.

My latest book review is Nathan Smith Hipps' book "Remembrance." This will appear (I think) in this Wednesday's edition of the Albany Herald. Nathan grew up in the Fitzgerald, Georgia, area (the setting of most of the book.) He now lives in Tallahassee, Florida.

Next Sunday evening the Women's Chorale and the Acapella Choir from CC High School will be performing at 7:00 pm at First Baptist Church. We will be returning from a trip to Florida, but plan to be there for this treat. Hope to see you there.

While we are talking about choral music, the musical this year is "Cats," and will be presented on February 15-18 at Withers Auditorium. Please let us know if you would like us to help you obtain tickets for any of these performances.

If you'd like to join our book club we will be meeting at the newly remodeled Western Sizzlin' on the 4th Monday evening, January 22. We get together at 6:30 for dinner and start talking about books around 7:00. We encourage everyone attending to spend around 5 minutes talking about a book that they've really enjoyed lately, and one person spends 10 to 15 minutes giving us a more "in-depth" review of a book they've read recently. The person who does the longer review gets to choose a book from our store. If you plan to join us, please let us know by sending an e-mail to fran_jim_dance@yahoo.com or phone us at the store 985-9425.

We must begin by saying "Thank You" to you, our loyal customers, for giving us the opportunity to help you find the books you'd like to read or give to others.

Another thing that Fran and I are thankful for is the wonderful choral music we've enjoyed since we moved to Moultrie 5 years ago. We have both been singing in church choirs all of our lives, as well as singing in the Albany Chorale for many years before we moved to Moultrie. So for us, the time from Thanksgiving to Christmas is such a treat when we have so many opportunities to listen to great choral music. On the Monday after Thanksgiving we attended our Moultrie Community Chorus presentation of Handel's "Messiah" at Withers Auditorium. We did our Christmas Cantata at our church, First Presbyterian, on Sunday, December 10, and we also attended a "Lessons and Carols" service at St. Margaret's of Scotland Episcopal Church presented by the "Seranaders" that same afternoon. We went to Albany on Monday, December 11, to hear the Albany Chorale's Holiday Concert, and on Sunday, December 17, we attended the Christmas Musical presented by the adult choir at First Baptist Church here in Moultrie. So if any of you or your family sang in any of these performances, a great big "THANK YOU" for reminding us of the Christmas story through music. We missed some of the choral programs this year because, for some strange reason, you just can't be in 2 places at the same time - no matter how hard you try!!! But we really would enjoy hearing from you, our booklovers group, if you know of a choral program coming up in our area. Just send us an e-mail with the date, time and location. We will then try to let others know through our e-mails.

While we are talking about choral music coming up in the near future, you are all invited to attend First Presbyterian Church, Moultrie, on Sunday, January 14, when Benjamin Harlan, professor of music at the Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans, LA, will be joining us for our morning worship. "Benjie" is one of the very favorite composers for our adult choir. Among other things, he composed an anthem that is dedicated to our "Choir Director, Kathy Wright, and the Chancel Choir at First Presbyterian Church, Moultrie, GA." That is one of the anthems we will be presenting that Sunday. Of course, we'd love for you to join us ANY Sunday, but that one should be a real treat.

Also coming up real soon is the Spring Musical presented by the CCHS Choral Department. This year's musical is "Cats," and it will be presented Thursday through Sunday, February 15-18. If you need help in obtaining tickets for this performance, let us know and we will try to assist you.

As always, click here to find our Books & More Web Site with book reviews and links to best sellers list.

If you are interested, send me an e-mail and I'll send our menu choices for dinner. (Kathy at Al's always fixes us an outstanding meal.) The following is a brief review of the book. "He didn't look like much. With his smallish stature, knobby knees, and slightly crooked forelegs, he looked more like a cow pony than a thoroughbred. But looks aren't everything; his quality, an admirer once wrote, "was mostly in his heart." Laura Hillenbrand tells the story of the horse who became a cultural icon in Seabiscuit: An American Legend."

The troop is currently making plans for a camping trip sometime in the next few months.

Newsletter - May 2004

New Arrivals - After all the big cities had sold thousands of copies of Richard Clarke's new book, Against All Enemies (list price $27.00), we finally received our copies Friday. Several of you have asked for this book and I've been telling you it's been on back order, been on back order, been on back order, and I'm afraid that I've misplaced my list of people who wanted it. So if I've promised you one, please call me and I'll tag it and put it aside for you. I've not had a chance to read this book yet, but plan to do so in the near future, so I'm not able to give you my personal recommendations about this book. I've used the standard PR information about this book as follows: "The disturbing truth about the war on terror is revealed by the man who served--until spring 2003--for 11 years as the White House Counterterrorism Czar. Through gripping, thriller-like scenes, he tells the full story for the first time, and explains exactly what the Bush Administration is doing."

Bob Woodward's Plan of Attack should be here in the store next week. Several of you have called about this book, since so much has been in the news about it. The New York Times states, "In his engrossing new book, Plan of Attack, Bob Woodward uses myriad details to chart the Bush administration's march to war against Iraq. His often harrowing narrative not only illuminates the fateful interplay of personality and policy among administration hawks and doves, but it also underscores the role that fuzzy intelligence, Pentagon timetables and aggressive ideas about military and foreign policy had in creating momentum for war. - Michiko Kakutani"

Other new arrivals - Children's Books - The Magic Tree House series, Dick and Jane series, Junie B. Jones series. We had run out of our inventory of these in the last few weeks and we have just restocked.

Bibles - We have 39 different versions and print sizes of the printed Bible, 4 different versions of the Bible on Cassette and 4 different versions of the Bible on CD all available in our store. We have Bibles for children, teens, serious Bible scholars, and Giant Print for those of us who need help in seeing the text.

Click here for the latest version of the USA Today Best Sellers List.

School Children's Essays - This year I was asked to be one of the judges of the essays written by our Colquitt County school children. Each of the 10 elementary schools selected a winner from all of their students in the Pre-K through 2nd grade and another winner from the 3rd grade through 5th grade level. They removed the names of the children and the school from the essays so that we, the judges, would judge just the written content of the essays. The title of their essays was "What Reading Means to Me." I was thoroughly impressed with all the winning entries from which I had to try and select a number 1, 2 and 3. I had to read each and every essay many times because they were ALL so well written. When I think of someone in Pre-K to 2nd grade writing a half page to a full page essay on why reading is important ??? I know when I was in those grades in school I certainly was not even asked to write anything! Our education system here in Colquitt County is very much alive and well with seeing this sampling of work from each and every school. Our principals, teachers and staff are to be commended as well as all the students for obtaining such great results.

Mother's Day is the day after tomorrow (Sunday May 9) and we have a large selection of cards, books and gift items for Mom.

Graduation for Pre-K, High School, College, and everything in between is also approaching quickly. Check out our selection of cards, books and gifts for those special graduates in your life.

Camp Bungalow - One of our local artists, Karen Sasine, is starting a summer day camp for children ages 6 to 13 geared toward instilling an appreciation of and participation in various forms of art including visual arts as well as drama. For more information, see the fliers at Books & More. Karen was featured on the front page of the Moultrie Observer within the last few weeks.

Dancing - Fran and I have just returned from a terrific weekend of dancing in Pensacola, Florida. We spent many hours on the dance floor dancing foxtrot, waltz, cha cha, rumba, quickstep and a new rhythm for us, West Coast swing. If you are interested in learning one of these rhythms, we would love to work with you. We have set aside Thursday evenings from 7:00 until 8:00 to share our love of dancing with you. Many of you that we talk to about dancing bring up the fact that you don't have a dancing partner. Sometimes this is a woman saying she doesn't have a man as a partner, some times this is a man saying he doesn't have a lady as a partner. But remember while it is great if your partner happens to also be your spouse, it doesn't HAVE to be your spouse. Your partner could be a son, daughter, grandchild, niece, nephew, next door neighbor, friend, etc. etc. It doesn't have to be a romantic partner!!

Books on Tape - While Fran and I are driving to and from Tallahassee to teach dancing and any weekend while we travel far and wide to learn dancing, we have been listening to books on tape, and inspirational tapes. Lately we have been listening to tapes by Billy Graham's daughter, Anne Graham Lotz. We have listened to one series on Joshua and another on Abraham. These tapes are simply outstanding! I just talked to one of our customers today calling from New Mexico, and he has listened to the Joshua tape 3 or 4 times and agrees with us that they are fantastic!!! I would heartily recommend any of these tapes while you're traveling or if you just like to listen to books on tape any time. In addition to Anne Graham Lotz tape selection we have just added another 20 titles to our used tape selection located at the end of the main aisle on the left.

Leather - Some of you have noticed that Gregory Heatherly has been working in the back of our store each and every day making leather purses, belts, key chains, etc. He usually sells his personalized key chains for $5, but he has said that for the next 2 weeks he will sell a personalized key chain to you for only $2 with any other purchase at Books & More. This is a $3 savings off the regular price of $5. Greg currently has Georgia Bulldog belts available. CCHS Packer belts will arrive shortly.

Magazines - Just a reminder that we now have over 30 magazines in the hobby/craft area covering toys, trains, planes, boats, and doll houses (just to name a few). Also a reminder that we have most of the folks that are interested in flying remote control planes or seeing them flown go out to Spence Field every Sunday afternoon. If you want to just go watch or participate, the invitation is open to all. We also have started carrying Southwest Georgia Living magazine, and this month's issue has a short article about Moultrie in it.

Authors - We have 2 authors coming to the Moultrie area real soon. The first is Pat Weaver who is doing a class at the Arts Center on Friday - Sunday, May 21 - 23 from 9 am to 3 pm. We stock her book, Watercolor Simplified, at Books & More. We have a copy of the supplies that she recommends that you bring to the class and will give you a 10% discount on any of these supplies that you need as well as a discount on her book.

The second author who is coming to Moultrie is Jana Cone, author of Burned. At the last meeting of the Book Club, we decided that to celebrate over a year of good reads we would hold our next meeting at one of our local restaurants. We chose Monday, June 28 for our next meeting and selected the book entitled Burned to read. This book is the true story of the Sheila Bryan murder case written by Jana Cone from Tifton. This case was spotlighted on "Court TV" and "48 Hours Investigates." We are delighted to let you know that Jana has agreed to join us on Monday, June 28, to talk about her book!!! The books are available now at Books & More. List price is $24.95, but cost to our book club members is only $22. You can visit Jana's web site at http://www.janacone.com/ We usually start snacking at 7:00 at our meetings, but since we're enjoying a meal this time, we'll plan to meet at 6:30. We talked with Kathy at Al's Super Subs on the square in Historic Downtown Moultrie and since she is already open every evening, she has offered us a SUPER deal!!! We can choose from 1) Lasagna, 2) Blackened Talapia (fish) or 3) Grilled chicken with red peppers and mushrooms. All dinners come with beverage, salad, bread and dessert for $8.95 (plus tax and tip). Jim and I eat at Al's frequently and really enjoy any of the meals served there!! We'll be meeting either in the "Secret Garden" at the rear of Antiques on the Square or in Al's depending on how many of us plan to attend. However, if you are planning to attend, we MUST HAVE YOUR RESERVATION NO LATER THAN JUNE 15 PLEASE!!

A Wrinkle in Time - Another bit of news (many thanks to Don Broome for sharing this information.) Many of us enjoyed Madeleine L'Engle's book A Wrinkle In Time." The movie version will air on Monday, May 10, on ABC at 8:00 pm. Click on the following link to go to the web site. http://abc.go.com/movies/awrinkleintime.html.

Community Wide Yard Sale - On April 3rd we had one of the largest Community-Wide Yard Sales in recent years. The Downtown Moultrie Association plans to have another in the fall (tentatively scheduled for Saturday, November 6.) Make your plans now to start gathering items for the yard sale. With the hundreds of people who come downtown for this sale, you will have an easy and profitable yard sale!

Service League Cookbook - For you collectors of unique, hometown cookbooks, here is an opportunity to expand your collection. We have a cookbook that has been put together by the wonderful cooks who happen to be members of the Colquitt County Service League. 100% of the purchase price of this book goes to the Service League.

Lemon-Aide - Sharon Herndon brought us some of the Lemon-Aide clowns last week. She has teamed up with another cancer survivor and have ordered in their 1st shipment of 3500 clowns. We have several of the "Lemon-Aide" dolls available at our store. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of these dolls will be donated to Cancer research and treatment. Cancer has affected most of our families (including mine) and we just feel that Sharon has done an outstanding job in carrying through this idea.

Children's Advocacy Center - We have a donation canister on the front counter for the Children's Advocacy Center here in Moultrie where you can place your change if you so desire.

Books & More Best Sellers:

One of our best sellers in the store has been The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown. I was so impressed with his writing in this book that I immediately read (within the next 2 days) one of his other books, Digital Fortress. He has another book out that I haven't read yet called Angels and Demons, and I'm looking forward to reading that one in the near future. Since The DaVinci Code touches on many aspects of the Christian faith, it has sparked an interest in not only my reading, but also others here in the store of reading books about Christianity. For instance, Holy Blood, Holy Grail by Michael Baigent, and one that I am currently reading, Templar Gold, Discovering the Ark of the Covenant by Patrick Byrne.

Another one of our recent best sellers is the book about Mel Gibson's movie The Passion of Christ that portrays the last 12 hours of the life of Jesus Christ. We have sold out of this book 2 times already and have just received another 5 copies last week. Around 80 people from our church went to see this movie after church on Sunday afternoon a couple of weeks ago. We returned to the church afterward for a discussion about the movie and most people agreed with the accuracy of what they feel the scriptures say as Mel Gibson shows it, but it is a VERY graphic movie, and I would strongly suggest that you NOT take any young children or grandchildren to see it. Recently one of the Rant & Raves stated that it should have had a "P-17" rating where no one under the age of 17 would be admitted. I tend to agree with that suggestion.

Another one of our best sellers is still The South Beach Diet. For the last 3 months, we continue to sell many copies of this book, and I have had a lot of positive feedback from people who have read the book, followed the diet and lost weight - some just 20 or 30 pounds, others 50, and others even more. Fran and I keep saying we are going to start this diet sometime!!!!

If you are interested in seeing the USA Today Top 150 Best Sellers, please click here. We either have these in the store now, or if we have sold out, we'll be glad to order you a copy.

Some of you know that we teach dancing in Tallahassee every Tuesday and here in Moultrie on Thursday evenings. While we are traveling to and from Tallahassee, we often listen to books on tape. Currently we are listening to the 4th Harry Potter book, The Goblet of Fire. Fran has read all of the books, but is still enjoying listening to them on tape. I had not read any of them, and have REALLY been impressed. Sometimes we get back home at nearly 11:00 at night and will wait in the car for the end of a chapter before stopping the tape. Incidentally, since we're talking about dancing, if any of you are interested in learning to dance, please let us know. We'll be starting a new class within the next few weeks and would love to share our love of dancing with you.

Recently our choir director, Kathy Wright, loaned us her copy of the 4-tape series on the study of the book of Joshua by Anne Graham Lotz, daughter of well-loved evangelist Billy Graham. We were so impressed with that study that we contacted Anne's "AnGel Ministries" and ordered every tape that they have available. Thursday that shipment arrived, and these tapes are available for rent or for sale. We will try to keep them in stock for you. As we listen to more of these tapes, we'll include comments in future newsletters.

New Items at the Store:

Some of you have noticed that we have started having handmade leather belts, key chains, Bible pulls, etc. in stock. These are made by Gregory Heatherly who has set up shop in the back room of our store. He is there almost every day to talk to you about any special requests you have for tooling on belts, key chains, purses, Bible Covers, and such. We also have four large pieces of leather that can be used for larger products. He has even brought in a large piece of green leather for anything you might want made for St. Paddy's Day. Greg would love to talk to you about any ideas that you would like to see crafted in leather. Leather crafting is a unique talent that is not found in every town. We are delighted that Greg has agreed to share his talent with our community.

David Warburg has also set up shop in the other back room at our store for building models of cars, trucks, boats, rockets, planes, and even the big radio controlled planes. He is our expert in helping you build any of these items, or he will build it for you. All of the radio control planes that you see hanging from the ceiling in the store are ones that David has worked on. We have one display case that shows over 50 of David's completed projects that are for sale.

For our modeling and craft enthusiasts, we now have magazines relating to your hobby. New titles arrive every week. We now have 5 or 6 different magazines on model railroading, as well as close to 10 on radio controlled boats and planes. We also have general hobby magazines and magazines on doll houses, etc.

Upcoming Events on the Square in Historic Downtown Moultrie:

Don't forget the Community Wide Yard Sale that will take place on Saturday, April 3 beginning around 7:00 am. Last fall we had more booth spaces rented out and more people at the yard sale than we have ever had in the past. It looks like we may have even more this spring. We have one of these yard sales in the spring and one in the fall to raise money for the Downtown Moultrie Association. These funds allow us to bring you the FREE concerts that we have been having each year in the Lewis Hill Amphitheater, like The Kinchafoonee Cowboys last year and The River the year before.

On Saturday, April 10, there will be an Easter Egg Hunt at 10:00 am on the square, sponsored by the Recreation Department and the Mainstreet Department. For more information, phone 890-5455.

This year the Spring Fling and Backyard Bar-B-Que Festival on Saturday, April 17 will end with a country-western concert by the Michael Stacey Band. If you are interested in entering the Bar-B-Que competition, contact Rocky Jones at 890-1355. The Humane Society is sponsoring various Pet Contests. For complete information about the many events planned for April 17, click here to visit the web site.

I've been having so much fun with listening to tapes and dancing and reading and making room for our leather-crafting and model-building, that I have not made plans for another author signing. If you know of an author who lives fairly near and might want to come to Moultrie, please let us know.

January Newsletter
January 17, 2004

HI EVERYONE!!! It's a brand new year again. We sincerely hope your holiday season was merry, and wish for everyone a very Happy and Prosperous New Year! Just wanted to let you know what's happening at Books & More and in our community in the near future.

We just received our new Valentines Cards for husbands, wives, children and grandchildren, friends, or sweethearts.

On Wednesday, January 28th, from 4:30-5:30 Pam Alexander, a Georgia teacher and the publisher and illustrator of a series of books about Georgia, will be joining us to sign her books. The main character of the series is Yumion, a walking, talking Vidalia Onion®, and the reading level for the series is kindergarten through 3rd grade. Not only do children love the illustrations, but they enjoy the story because it is written in rhyme. Rhonda Kight, who is Pam's partner in this venture and the author of the books, has very cleverly blended fact (places) and fiction (Yumion) into a fun to read story.

To read more about these books, please visit the website at www.besweetpublications.com.

Planes and Trains

When you visit our store, you can't help but notice the radio controlled planes hanging from the ceiling and the electric train running around the front of the store. We just want you to know that you can purchase these planes that are already put together, or buy a kit and put it together for yourself, or you can buy a kit and have us help you build it. You'll also see some finished rockets hanging from the ceiling and in our display case all of which are for sale. We have rocket engines, parachutes and everything that you would need to launch your rocket. We also have rocket kits for everyone from the beginner to the more advanced "rocketeer."

HALF PRICE USED BOOK SALE ALL THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY!!!!

AT BOOKS & MORE IN HISTORIC DOWNTOWN MOULTRIE

This half-price sale is the most "asked about" sale that we have during the year. For those of you who have never been able to take advantage of this half price sale, it means that you can select as many USED books as you want, paperback, hardback, children's books, comics, 1st editions, autographed books, etc. There is no limit on quantity nor are there any "hold-outs" on our USED inventory. Since this sale is open all during the month of February, stop in often and be sure to tell all of your friends about this great opportunity. (They might want to take advantage of this sale, too.) So come see us during the month of February!

Last Saturday evening, we enjoyed a rare treat when we attended "An Evening of Dance" at Withers Auditorium hosted by the Colquitt County Arts Center and sponsored in part by CNS Television. Young dancers encompassing many different age groups gave a performance that truly blessed our "arts loving hearts!" We didn't attend out of any sense of obligation since we didn't have any children or grandchildren to OOOO and AAAHHH over. We attended to show our support for the performing arts in Colquitt County. We were very impressed with the lighting, the sound, and the caliber of dance instruction that was reflected in this performance. The South Georgia Ballet Company's goals are best stated at their web site (http://www.sgpa.us/arts.html) where they say: "Live performances can inspire a child to explore their own potential in the arts and beyond, developing each student's self worth, desire for excellence, and creative talents." Truly Saturday's show demonstrated achievements of these goals. But none of these goals could be reached without the commitment of the young people to invest long hours of practice to aspire to this level of performing expertise. Becca Turner, director of the Colquitt County Arts Center, and the board of directors are to be commended for their foresight in teaming up with this outstanding dance group. Saturday's performance also shows what can happen in a community when the City, the County, and the school board work together to provide a first class facility for such events.

While we're talking about dancing, Fran and I will be starting a new round dance class on Thursday, January 29, at the Colquitt County Arts Center, at 7:00 pm. Round Dancing is a "close kissing cousin" to ballroom dancing. We haven't decided what rhythm we'll teach this time. We thought we'd demonstrate several different ones (cha cha, rumba, jive, waltz, 2-step) and let the students vote on which to learn first. Why don't you come and join us. It's great fun and super exercise.

Books read and recommended by Jim and various customers in the store:

Red Rabbit (Tom Clancy) - If you are a Tom Clancy fan and enjoy one of his characters, Jack Ryan, you'll love this book. It takes place after Patriot Games but before Cardinal of the Kremlin. I had trouble putting it down, even though it is a fairly long book, but then again, does he ever write a short one?
The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For? (Rick Warren) - Several churches in the area have used Rick Warren's books for study and I have heard that this year some 10,000 different churches are going to venture into a study using his books.
Jimmy Carter's new novel about the Revolutionary War, The Hornet's Nest, has been a recent best seller for us and enjoyed by many of our customers. Jimmy Carter also did the art work for the cover of the book.
Does God Know How to Tie Shoes (Nancy White Carlstrom) - This is truly a delightful book for children. A child asks questions which the parents answer from scriptures.

The next meeting of the book club will be on January 26 at 7:00 pm at the office of Dr. Terry Croyle (Regional Eye Care Associates, 2375 S. Edwina's great uncle, Ira Hancock, had a photography studio on the courthouse square here in Moultrie, and his brother, Sidney, had a barber shop here in the downtown area. Her great uncle, Luke Carter, owned a tombstone business in the Moultrie area, and her great-great-great-great grandfather was Henry Crawford Tucker, one of the original settlers of Moultrie. March Newsletter

March 19, 2003

Fran and I have had our first experience in participating in a book club that is sponsored by our church, First Presbyterian. Approximately 15 book lovers read Catherine Todd's book, Exit Strategies, and met at our home on Monday, March 17, to enjoy a time for enjoying refreshments provided by everyone and sharing our comments and reactions. Our next selection will be To Kill a Mockingbird. If you would like to be a part of a book club, please e-mail Fran (fransoos@moultriega.net) or let us know the next time you are in the store. Depending on the response, we might have to start another group since a group of more than 15 might be a little cumbersome. We are aware that there are some other book clubs here in Moultrie that have already closed their memberships because they purchase their books through Books & More.

A couple of weeks ago, Fran and I spent a delightful evening with author, Jackie K. Cooper, at Henderson Village near Perry, Georgia. If you recall, Jackie visited our store last year, autographing his latest book, Chances and Choices, Further Tales of a Gentle Southern Man. We met other book store owners, authors, and book lovers at this event. Jackie is a great speaker, and kept the intimate crowd of 35 or so chuckling all evening. We are looking forward to having him in our area again in the near future. Please click here to visit Jackie's web site.

Our February Half-Price Sale was one of the best ever! Even though February is the shortest month of the year, more people took advantage of stocking up on used books than ever before! Hope you were one of them and are happy with your purchases. Already, I've had several people ask when the next half-price sale will take place. We'll have another one in the Fall.

If you will click here, this will take you to a link showing you some of the kindergarten children from J.M. Odom Elementary School, who visited Books & More on February 26 & 27. I learned that even our kindergarten-age children are being taught how to write stories. I know that I didn't have this training at that age. Neither did my children. I think our teachers are to be commended for trying to instill a love of books, reading and writing at an early age. I had a great time reading to four different groups of these children, and some of the stories I read they already knew by heart, so that when I paused, they were able to complete the sentence!

Just last week, I was invited to read at R.B. Wright Elementary School for two of the 2nd grade classes during the "Read Across America" in honor of the birthday of Dr. Seuss. At R.B. Wright, they had a BIG red bow tie for me to wear, and some big fuzzy "Cat in the Hat" slippers. As always I had a wonderful time reading to the children. They are so attentive and responsive to this extra special outside interaction with their classes. Fran volunteers every Monday at the media center at Sunset School and loves the opportunity to work with the children there. Our school system here in Colquitt County is one of the best that I have seen. Of course, there is always room for improvement, but remember that positive things happen when people GET INVOLVED!!! I encourage each of you to contact a teacher or principal to volunteer your time in whatever capacity you choose. Or click here to go to the Colquitt County Communities in Schools web site.

Thanks to all of you for contributing to my bail money for the American Heart Association "Cardiac Arrest." I had a lot of fun appearing before "Heartless Judge Harrison" as so many other arrestees did. Judge Harrison takes no pity on ANYONE!!!

If you will please go to the following link www.franswebsites.com/troops.htm, it will take you to a web site showing a list of military personnel from Colquitt County who have been deployed to the Middle East. Please review this list, and if you have are aware of any additions to this list, please email Fran Soos.

We would like to let you know about the County-Wide yard sale coming up on Saturday, April 5. There are several different things that you can do, and any support would be greatly appreciated. You can pass this e-mail on to any of your friends in the area who might be interested in either coming to the yard sale or having a booth that day. Also, if you belong to a volunteer organization that is experiencing a shrinking income, this is an easy way to raise money with very little overhead.

Remember that you can have a booth for yourself or for your organization. Just stop by Books & More, In Due Time, or the Main Street Office to sign up. Costs are $20 or $25 depending on the size of the booth you need.

PLEASE HELP! I have some "insider information" that tells me I'm going to be arrested for "impersonating Dr. Seuss." The mean, non-understanding judge has set bail at $500. When you come to the store the next time, will you please donate $1 to the Heart Fund towards my bail?

Author Signing - Taylor Schoettle, author and naturalist, will be autographing his books,A Field Guide to Jekyll Island, A Field Guide to Sea Island, A Naturalist's Guide to St. Simons and A Guide to a Georgia Barrier Island, at Books & More from 3:30 to 5:30 pm on Tuesday, January 28th. Please stop by to meet this interesting and dedicated naturalist and author. Later that evening, from 7:30 - 8:30 he will be the guest speaker at the meeting of The Georgia Conservancy at 1st Presbyterian Church in the Fellowship Hall. The Courthouse And The Depot: A Narrative Guide To Railroad Expansion And Its Impact On Public Architecture In Georgia 1833-1910 by Wilber W. Caldwell ($50.00) is a great book for those of you who enjoy reading about Georgia's architectural & social history in the 19th century. The book provides a clear view of rural southern history, and provides a useful collection of the local history of 159+ counties in Georgia including our own Colquitt County.

It also is a excellent study of the architectural styles of the various courthouses across our state, so any architect or builder would enjoy reading it. Railroad enthusiasts will enjoy reading it since it also goes into great detail about all the independent railroad lines that were in each county. On reviewer of this book stated that the "railroad development during this time period was the equivalent of a 19th century Interstate Highway." This book would be a welcome addition as a "coffee table book" for any home that enjoys reading Georgia history. We have one of these books on display at the store on the round table for you to see with a notation for the pages of Colquitt County history and the photo of our beautiful, historic courthouse.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book V) will be released at last on Saturday, June 21st! I know this seems like a long way off, but in order for us to order sufficient quantity so that we might reserve a FIRST EDITION copy of this book for you, we must know that you want us to save you one! Two years ago, when book IV came out in hardback, we sold out of First Editions and some people had to be satisfied with a 3rd or 4th printing of the book.

So many of you keep asking about the Sonny Sammons sequel to The Keepers of Echowah. I talked to his publisher, Ken Boyd, last week and was advised that the new "target date" for this book is this summer. Once we get a firm date, we will invite Sonny to come back to Moultrie to visit with his large group of fans from this area.

Do you have friends who you think would enjoy receiving our e-mail newsletters? If so, please forward this e-mail to them and encourage them to send us their e-mail address so we can let them know when we update the web site. Each of your friends who ask to be added to our e-mail book-lovers group will receive a $5 gift certificate for USED BOOKS. Also, if they name you as the person referring them, you will also receive a $5 gift certificate for USED BOOKS. Please Note: We DO NOT GIVE OUT OUR E-MAIL BOOK LOVERS GROUP ADDRESSES to anybody!

The next County-Wide Yard Sale will take place on the Courthouse Square on Saturday, April 5. Many of you belong to organizations that are looking for a way to raise money. The turn-out is always more than we expect, and we have had some people sell over $1000 during this event. Please phone me at 229-985-9425 or e-mail me to reserve a spot for your organization.

Hello again! Fran and I are off dancing again this weekend, but we're having a Half-Price Used Book Sale at Books & More while we are away! ALL of our used books inside the store are at half of their used price. Also, on Friday and Saturday, November 8 & 9, we are having a sidewalk sale with lots of books displayed on the sidewalk for only $1. So you serious book readers, stop in and take advantage of these special prices.

In our new books section, we have hundreds of new arrivals, including biographies, travel, children's books, Civil War books, Cookbooks and many more. A lot of people have already started taking advantage of these new arrivals to start their Christmas shopping, and are putting books aside for their favorite reading friends. Don't forget that we offer free gift-wrapping, and if you're not sure what books your friends have already read, why not select a Christmas Gift Certificate. Gift Certificates are available in any amount you choose.

On Sunday afternoon, November 17, from 3:00 - 5:00 pm a Special Benefit for Birdsong Nature Center, just outside of Thomasville, will feature 3 Georgia Authors - Janisse Ray, Victor Miller & Bailey White. Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served, and there will be drawings for prizes. Tickets for this event are only $20. For reservations or more information, please call (229) 377-4408. Thanksgiving Evening Activities - Can you believe that Thanksgiving is almost here? Clifford the Big Red Dog had so much fun the last two years when he visited Moultrie, that he asked if he could come back and get some more hugs from all the super children here! So we bought a BIG BAG of dog chow (as well as some people treats) and hope you and your children and grandchildren will join him to watch the lighting of the Downtown Christmas Tree on Thanksgiving Evening at Books & More. We don't want to leave out the grown ups, so we have invited Georgia author, Lorene Bryant Epps, to join us. She has written a few books of the inspirational, feel good, sort. She recently published a biography about her brother, Jimmy Bryant, a famous guitar player from Moultrie, GA who made hundreds of recordings in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. We will also have her post card featuring our courthouse before its recent renovations, as well as several others of Jimmy Bryant. All of this will be going on from 5:00 until 8:00 on Thanksgiving Evening.

So stop by soon, and Let's Talk Books!!

Jim
